Recently I have noticed a theme in my life where I am talking to someone that isn’t happy and they mention one of the following thoughts. If they just moved to another town, if they could just get a new house or car, if they had more friends in their life, if they had a different career, then they would be happy. That to me is a horrible and unhealthy way of thinking. No matter who you are with or where you are, if you are unhappy external stimuli will not change your inner levels of happiness or satisfaction in life.
It might sound nice to have a new car, a better job, more money, more friends, etc. But those things can create momentary satisfaction and temporary happiness. When we do not have our own happiness and our own level of satisfaction in life we do tend to look at outward materialistic things to fill the void. The only way we can truly have a life that has a healthy level of happiness and satisfaction is to find things that we are thankful for.
The moment you begin to think of things that make you happy or things that you are thankful for you create a better mood for yourself which turns into a better and more cheerful life. Sometimes when I have a bad day I stop and think of three things that I am thankful for or the things that are going good in my life. For example, today I had a migraine that is a great reason to have a “bad day” but instead I am thankful that I have a calm and peaceful home that I can relax in until I feel better. I am thankful for the productive morning I had at work. My life is good because my bills are paid, my husband is an incredible and supportive man, I have Christmas decorations up (I am obsessed with Christmas so that is a HUGE thing I am happy about.) and I had an awesome workout that left me sore all day. Those are the things that I think about and they sustain my satisfaction and joy. No matter where you go in life if you are not happy inside of yourself that fact will not change if you move to a new town or have more friends. You must find boundless, perpetual and infinite thankfulness. You can find one or three hundred things but choose things that are not based on what you need, don’t have or wish you had. Be happy in the things that you are doing and the things that you have right now. Are you in good health? Do you have a roof over your head? Did you eat something today? Those might sound too simple but what percent of the world cannot answer yes to some or all of those questions. Believe me we each have things to be thankful for and that is something to be happy about.
It is important that I remind you that we must balance our satisfaction with hunger. We can simultaneously be happy and satisfied in life while staying hungry and eager. I can be proud of myself and satisfied after a great workout but I can’t wait to get back in the gym tomorrow because I know the more I keep at it the better and stronger I become. I am happy that I am sticking to a workout regime but I am eager to always improve and get a new personal record. Get happy and stay satisfied with each new accomplishment in life but stay hungry for greater things. You ALWAYS have something to be happy about. When your head hits your pillow at night you have at least one thing that you should be able to feel accomplished and satisfied with. Make sure to wake up with resoluteness and fortitude each new day and you will begin to find your inner happiness and satisfaction because you are more capable than you know.
