Substitutions

January 23rd, 2018

I have an intense appreciation for impeccable health. It is our responsibility to take care of our bodies and fuel it properly. For an optimum level of health I would say it is necessary to include many things, a few of them are exercise, proper eating habits, mental health, spiritual health, emotional health but that is not where it ends for those are just your base levels of health. One key factor that I have adopted for my life is substitutions when it comes to eating.

For years now I haven’t had sodas or sugary carbonated drinks, I opt for water anytime it is an option. I don’t drink water to stay full and lose weight, my purpose is to stay hydrated. It takes me a lot of water to feel properly hydrated, it is easy for me to drink an average of a gallon of water each day.

Refined vs. whole grains. Yes, I grew up on white bread for my ham and cheese sandwiches but now that I have to opportunity to actively make changes in my life I go for whole wheat whole grain breads. I find the whole grains fill me up and keep me full longer than the refined grains. That goes for pasta and rice as well, I eat the brown rice and whole wheat whole grain pastas.

Both fruit and candy are colorful and sweet, but we all know that fruit has so many nutrients and vitamins that our bodies require. It took some time to change from eating candy to fruits but after a while I found myself craving fruits completely. Many types of fruit have just as many grams of sugar as candy but so you will find that fruit is more satisfying to your body if you give it a chance. It is just another substitution towards a better lifestyle.

Our bodies demand protein, vitamins, fiber, carbohydrates, fats, sugars and sodium. I have no eating restrictions for myself other than trying to keep a clean eating habit. I love foods that are in their most natural state possible. I avoid processed foods, sugary drinks (though I am a sucker for egg nog at Christmas), foods that don’t contain sustenance that my body needs or uses efficiently. I don’t torture myself when it comes to food either. When there is a birthday I will eat cake or when my co-worker brings in brownies I will eat that too. I am not shy when it comes to food, I use it as a tool to fuel my body suitably. I encourage you to make healthy substitutions with your eating habits. Trade out the foods that don’t contain a large amount of key nutrients for a variety of foods that fulfill your protein, vitamin or carbohydrate needs. Let me put it to you this way, if your vehicle is out of fuel and go pull up to the gas station where you see two fuel options either unleaded 87 or 1/2 unleaded 87 and 1/2 refined sugar, which would you chose? That might seem silly but our cars would not run on the 1/2 and 1/2 because the refined sugar would ruin our fuel system to the point that our vehicle would not perform optimally. Same goes for our bodies, fuel it properly, make substitutions where necessary and with all you do, know that it is your job and yours alone to take care of the body you are given to live with forever.
