It’s the simple things in life that bring me the most joy. Life can be as simple or as complex as we make it. I prefer the simple life filled with extraordinary experiences. Possessions have very little meaning to me except for the the select few trinkets from loved family members or dear friends. I watched a movie and there was a scene in it that the character asks, “If your house was burning down and you only had a few minutes to grab the important things, what would you take with you?” Can you answer this questions? Can you carry everything that you want or would you need a pickup truck? Do you value things, people or experiences?
I can tell you most of the important things in life I will always have with me because they are memories of a fully lived life. It’s motorcycle trips across the United Sates, it is camping in 5 degree weather for Thanksgiving, it is snuggling up on the couch with the dog and a cozy blanket watching one of my favorite movies. These are the things that are most important to me, living a life that is filled with joy, laughter, adventure and relaxation.
Now if my house was burning down I know exactly what I would take with me. My husband and two dogs. My Russian plate set from my Grandpa. My jewelry box, I not only have jewelry in it but a few small prized possessions. I would take all my guns with me. A few old and collectable books that I have cherished for years. My file folder with all of my important documents in it. I would grab my computer, camera and phone. Lastly I would take a book, magazine and letter opener that my Dad gave me before he died. I know what matters most to me and they are all attached to memories and people that I love. Other than things I just enjoy experiences. We only have one life to live and we can’t take things with us. Going on two motorcycle trips for over a month at a time with a half of a suitcase to my name I realized how much I truly don’t need. If I have food, water, shelter and and my loved ones near me I am one of the richest people on earth.
What are your prized possessions? What do you prefer things or people? Do you value experiences or belongings? There isn’t a right or wrong answer. We are all different and the things that matter to me might not be important to others and vise versa. Know what matters to you and don’t even bother with things that you don’t have high value for. They only clutter your life and create a mess where you could have single focused clarity. When I travel now I don’t buy souvenirs because I know that I don’t like things. My house is leaning more minimal so I don’t buy stuff to fill it. I love clear, clean and open spaces therefore my focus is on experiences and getting a picture so that I have great memories. What matters to you?
