Moxie Monday: Everyday Routine

Life has gotten busy over the last few months. I have been working in our businesses, completing projects, working on a rental house, traveling and in the midst of it all still trying my best to keep a routine. I have absolutely failed at keeping any kind of routine lately. As I am typing this post today I have been pondering over what things are truly important to me and what I need in every day to feel successful. Here is what I have come up with.

Exercise. I love going to the gym and getting a great workout in. I enjoy walking or going on a run with my dogs. I love to do a good workout at home if things are feeling pretty rushed. I have slacked so much on any kind of a workout routine since we got home from our trip to Alaska. I am going to write out my new goals and create a plan that is manageable for me that also gets me the results that I want.

Meditate. After reading the book “10% Happier” by Dan Harris I tried meditating for the first time and was hooked. I sit on my front porch or on the floor in my office and sit quietly for 10 minutes. Afterwards I feel refreshed and calm. My brain feels rejuvenated and ready for the day after a simple 10 minute session. I like to use the app Calm to do a guided session as it helps me to stay focused and far more mellow.

Read. As long as I can remember I have been an avid reader. My entire childhood consisted of reading. I would get my limit of 10 books at the library every week and make my mom or brothers check more books out for me if they did not reach their limit. I always had 3-5 books on my night stand as I would read multiple books at a time. I loved mysteries and classic novels and autobiographies the most. Now I read a little bit of everything and I love it. I want to read every day whether that I one chapter each day or reading for 30 minutes. My vocabulary improves greatly when I read and I truly enjoy learning new things. Today I finished Agatha Christie’s “Evil Under The Sun” and started “Make Your Bed” by Admiral William H. McRaven.

Stretching. Over the past few weeks I have been doing a great deal of physical work that has left me sore and tired. I wake up hurting and go to bed hurting. Don’t worry, the tasks I am working on will be done within a month and then I can feel back to my old self. In the meantime, I want to stretch for 10-30 minutes everyday just to keep my muscles flexible and pliable. Stretching helps me sleep better at night and makes going to the gym a little less painful.

Coffee. If you know anything about me you know I love Dogs, Christmas and Coffee!!! It has become a routine to wake up get ready for the day and pour a coffee into my travel mug and I am out the door off to work on something. I have really missed waking up and taking a few minutes to pour some coffee into my coffee mug and sit and enjoy it fully. I am going to start taking in the moment a little better and plan on sitting down and having my coffee and reading a bit in whatever book I am currently reading.

What are some things that create a perfect day for you or a morning routine that make you feel a sense of success before you even walk out your front door? Why aren’t you making that a daily habit? I challenge you this week to sit down for an hour, write out things that are important to you, encourages you and brings you joy. From that list add the truly important items into your daily routine. There may be a few things you wrote out that you don’t want to do everyday, put those into your weekend plans or twice a month. But the core things that are important and beneficial to your life and well being, put them into a formation that works good for your life. Imagine this, everyday before you go to work or start your day you did something that beings you joy and peace, you completed something that makes you a smarter person and you learned something, you completed a task that gives you pride in yourself and boosts your self confidence and maybe you even choose to do something that causes you to learn to live in the moment and never take a second for granted. What a great start to you day and what an incredible stepping stone towards your journey to living a successful and fulfilling life.
